Shrewsbury and Telford NHS A Study on Static Training Bus Hire
Introduction
Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is the main provider of acute hospital services for nearly half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales. The Trust runs two main hospitals: the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shrewsbury, which together provide 99% of its activity.
The Trust also provides community and outreach services such as consultant-led clinics, midwife-led units, renal dialysis units, and community services including midwifery, audiology and therapies.
The Trust is committed to providing safe, effective and high-quality care for all patients. It monitors its performance against national standards and benchmarks, such as the NHS Constitution, the Care Qualitative Commission (CQC) ratings, the NHS Outcomes Framework and the NHS Improvement Single Oversight Framework.
The Trust also seeks feedback from patients, staff and stakeholders through various channels, such as surveys, complaints, compliments, friends and family tests, patient stories and engagement events.
The Trust is currently undergoing a Hospitals Transformation Programme (HTP), which aims to transform its services and facilities to meet the future needs of the population. The HTP involves building two new emergency departments, one at each hospital site; creating separate planned care centres for elective surgery; developing new models of care for women and children’s services; enhancing diagnostic capacity; improving IT infrastructure; and investing in staff development.
Challenge
As part of the HTP, the Trust needed to train its staff on new clinical systems and processes that would be implemented across both hospitals.
The Trust had limited space within its buildings to accommodate large groups of staff for training sessions. Moreover, the Trust wanted to minimise the disruption to staff’s work schedules and travel arrangements by providing training at their workplaces.
Solution
The Trust decided to hire a static training bus from Roadshow Promotions, a company that specialises in providing mobile promotional vehicles for various purposes. Roadshow Promotions has a fleet of static buses that are designed or designated to undertake medium to long-term static use contracts. These buses are pre-converted and equipped with features suitable for training purposes, such as worktops, seating, laptops, PCs, network connections, power sockets, heating and lighting.
The Trust hired RSP02, a double decker MCW Metrobus that can accommodate up to 16 trainees on the upper saloon. The bus was parked at the Princess Royal Hospital car park from March 2023 to November 2023.
The bus was connected to the building’s fibre broadband network which was, in turn, connected to an internal Cat6 cable network. The bus was used to deliver training sessions on various topics related to the HTP, such as new clinical systems, patient pathways, referral processes, data quality and governance.
Benefits
The static training bus hire provided several benefits for the Trust and its staff:
- It enabled the Trust to deliver training to its staff without needing to source dedicated training space within its buildings or external venues.
- It reduced the costs and time associated with staff travel and subsistence by bringing the training to their workplaces.
- It increased the accessibility and convenience of training for staff by offering flexible timings and locations.
- It enhanced the engagement and retention of staff by providing a comfortable and interactive learning environment.
- It supported the implementation of the HTP by ensuring that staff were well-informed and prepared for the changes.
Conclusion
The static training bus hire from Roadshow Promotions is expected to be a successful solution for the Trust’s training needs. Helping the Trust to achieve its vision of providing safe and compassionate care for all patients by transforming its services and facilities. It is also helping the Trust to be an excellent employer for all staff by providing them with learning and development opportunities.
